How do I get rid of cheonti (ants) in my kitchen?

Bait them, do not spray them. Spraying kills the workers you can see and can make the colony split and spread.

The ants on your counter are foragers — a small share of the colony. The nest is elsewhere, often in a wall void, under tiles or outside. Killing foragers changes nothing.

What works:

  1. Follow the trail to find where they enter. That is the point to seal.
  2. Use a slow-acting bait so workers carry it back to the nest. It looks like nothing is happening for several days — that is the mechanism, not a failure.
  3. Remove the food source — sugar, spillage, pet food left out, sticky jar rims, bins not sealed.
  4. Fix moisture — leaking taps and damp under the sink attract them.

Do not clean the trail away before treatment. The trail is how the bait gets distributed.

If they return repeatedly after spraying, get the species identified before anything else is applied.

What are the tiny flies around my sink and bin?

Almost certainly drain flies or fruit flies, and both are breeding in something organic nearby rather than flying in from outside.

Drain flies are small, moth-like and sit still on walls near the sink. They breed in the film lining a drain pipe. Cleaning the floor and spraying the air does nothing; the drain itself has to be cleaned out.

Fruit flies hover around fruit, bins, drink bottles and mop buckets. They breed in the residue, not in the room.

Find the source in this order: sink and floor drains, the bin and the area under it, forgotten fruit and vegetables, drink and juice residue, mop heads and buckets, and any water sitting under equipment.

Once the breeding site is cleaned, numbers fall within days. Until it is, you can spray every morning and see them again by evening.

What causes silverfish in cupboards, books and documents?

Damp. Silverfish need humidity, and they feed on paper, cardboard, glue and starch — which is why they turn up in bookshelves, archives and stored files.

They are not a hygiene problem and they do not bite. They are a moisture indicator, and they can genuinely damage documents, book bindings, wallpaper and stored clothing.

What to do:

  • Fix the damp first — leaks, condensation, poor ventilation in a store room. Without this, treatment is temporary.
  • Get paper off the floor and away from external walls
  • Use sealed boxes rather than open cardboard for archives
  • Ventilate closed store rooms regularly

This matters most for offices, law firms, banks and schools holding paper records, where the damage is to something irreplaceable rather than to the building.

How do I keep chhipkali (house lizards) out?

Reduce the insects they are eating and close the gaps they come through. There is no treatment aimed at lizards themselves, and they are harmless.

House lizards follow their food supply, and that supply is the insects gathering around your lights at night. Deal with the insects and the lizards move on.

  • Switch outdoor and balcony lights to warmer bulbs, which attract fewer insects
  • Fit or repair window mesh and door screens
  • Seal gaps around windows, air conditioner pipe holes and ventilation openings
  • Keep the general insect population down indoors

Worth saying plainly: they eat mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches, so many households decide to tolerate them. If they are only in the kitchen or bathroom at night, an insect problem is usually the real issue.

Why do I suddenly have so many flies?

Something nearby is breeding them. A sudden rise almost always means a source within a few metres, not flies arriving from a distance.

Check, in this order:

  • The bin — and the ground underneath it, which is usually worse
  • Drains — the film inside the pipe, especially kitchen and utility gullies
  • Forgotten food — fruit, vegetables, a spill behind an appliance
  • A dead rodent or bird in a wall, ceiling or roof void — a sudden large number of flies in one room with no obvious food source usually means this
  • Standing water and mop buckets

That fourth one is worth taking seriously. If flies are concentrated in a single room and there is any smell at all, look for a carcass rather than spraying.

Removing the source drops numbers within days. Spraying without finding it means they are back the next morning.

Tiny ants keep coming back no matter what I do. Why?

Because spray kills foragers and leaves the nest untouched — and with some small species it makes the colony split and spread.

Very small ants indoors are often a species with multiple queens. When they sense a threat, groups break away and set up satellite nests elsewhere in the building. So each round of spraying can turn one problem into several, which is exactly the pattern of “it keeps coming back, in more places”.

What works instead:

  1. Stop spraying. Residue on surfaces also stops them taking bait.
  2. Use slow-acting bait so workers carry it to the nest. Nothing appears to happen for several days — that is the mechanism.
  3. Leave the trail alone until the bait has been worked. The trail is how it gets distributed.
  4. Remove food and moisture — spillage, sticky jar rims, pet food, leaks under the sink.

If it has already recurred more than twice, get the species identified. That single step changes the whole approach.

There is a wasp nest on our property. Can we remove it ourselves?

No. A disturbed nest defends itself, and wasps sting repeatedly rather than once. This is one of the few jobs where the risk of doing it yourself is immediate rather than gradual.

Treat it as urgent if the nest is near a door, a walkway, a play area, or if anyone on the property has a sting allergy.

Until it is dealt with:

  • Keep everyone away and close windows on that side
  • Do not spray it, block the entrance, or knock it down
  • Do not use smoke or fire — this provokes the nest and risks a serious injury
  • Note where it is and how they are getting in and out

Proper removal means protective equipment, treating at the right time of day, and removing the nest so it is not recolonised. See wasp and hornet nest removal.

Pigeons are nesting on our building. What can be done?

Proofing, not poison. Birds are removed by taking away the ledges and openings they use, and the droppings need cleaning properly because they are a health issue in their own right.

Why it matters beyond appearance: droppings corrode paint and stonework, block drains and gutters, carry disease risk, and nesting material harbours mites and beetles that then enter the building.

What works:

  • Proofing on ledges, sills, parapets and plant platforms
  • Netting or mesh on recesses, shafts and open eaves
  • Nesting material removed and the fouling cleaned and disinfected
  • Feeding stopped — on shared buildings this usually needs a management notice

Something is eating holes in our clothes. What is it?

Almost certainly clothes moths or carpet beetles. The damage is done by the larvae, not the adults you see flying, which is why spraying the room changes nothing.

They feed on natural fibres — wool, silk, cotton, leather and fur — and prefer items that are stored, unwashed and undisturbed. Body oils and perspiration on stored clothes attract them.

What to do:

  1. Empty the wardrobe completely and inspect every item
  2. Wash or dry-clean everything before storing it again — this is the step that matters
  3. Vacuum the wardrobe, corners and carpet edges, then dispose of the bag outside
  4. Store seasonal clothing in sealed containers, not open shelves
  5. Check stored carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture too

Mothballs are not the answer, and they are a poisoning risk to small children.

There are insects in my flour and rice. What now?

They almost certainly came home in the packet. Stored product insects breed inside the grain, so the packet is the source rather than your kitchen.

What to do today:

  1. Check every dry good, not just the affected one — flour, rice, lentils, spices, dried fruit, nuts, pet food, birdseed.
  2. Discard anything infested. Sieving does not remove eggs.
  3. Empty and vacuum the shelves, including corners, screw holes and the underside of shelving.
  4. Wash and dry the cupboard fully before restocking.
  5. Store everything in sealed containers from now on, not the original paper packets.

Buying in smaller quantities and rotating stock prevents almost all repeat cases. Heat speeds their breeding, so it is far more common through the summer months.

Do you treat kitchen ants (cheentiyan) and silverfish?

Yes, and both are usually telling you something about the kitchen rather than simply being present.

Cheentiyan (ants) are following a food trail. The visible line is the route, not the problem — wiping it away removes the scent trail briefly and they reroute. Treatment uses bait they carry back to the nest, which is why it works where spraying does not. Spraying the line kills the workers you can see and leaves the colony producing more.

Silverfish are a damp signal. They need high humidity, so finding them repeatedly in one spot often points to a slow leak inside a wall or under a floor.

What helps immediately, at no cost: store sugar, honey and open packets in sealed containers, wipe spillage promptly, fix dripping taps, and keep the area under the sink dry and ventilated.

Both are straightforward to resolve once the source is identified — which is what the free inspection establishes.

Why do I have fruit flies when I do not leave fruit out?

Because they are almost certainly breeding in a drain, not in your fruit bowl.

Fruit flies need only a thin film of fermenting organic material to complete their cycle. The usual sources people never check:

  • Sink and floor drains — the film inside the pipe is the most common breeding site of all
  • The rim and base of the waste bin, even when emptied daily
  • Spillage under the fridge or in the gap beside the cooker
  • Damp mop heads and cleaning cloths
  • Water trays under potted plants
  • Bottle and can recycling with residue left in them

The test that settles it: tape a piece of clear plastic over a drain overnight. Flies trapped underneath in the morning confirm the drain is the source.

This is why spraying the kitchen does not work. Adults are killed, the breeding site is untouched, and a new generation emerges within days.

Clean the drain itself — the film on the pipe wall, not just flushing water through.

Why are fruit flies worse during mango season?

Heat, volume and ripeness arrive together — and mangoes are usually bought and stored in quantity rather than a few at a time.

Three things combine from roughly May through July:

  • Ripening speeds up in the heat, so fruit passes into over-ripeness faster than it is eaten
  • Fruit arrives by the crate, often already carrying eggs from the orchard or market
  • The fly life cycle shortens in warmth — egg to adult in about a week

What actually helps during the season: refrigerate ripe fruit rather than leaving crates out, keep the crate away from the kitchen, remove damaged fruit immediately since one split mango produces a great many flies, rinse skins on arrival, and empty and wash the bin daily.

Treat the drains before the season rather than during it. If the drain film is already clean when the fruit arrives, the population has nowhere to establish.

For juice shops, fruit sellers and restaurants this is a seasonal programme rather than a one-off visit.

Pre-season drain treatment — book an inspection.

Are fly sprays and swatters enough to control a fly problem?

No — they deal with the flies in the room, which is the smallest part of the problem. For every adult you see, many more are developing at the source.

A housefly goes from egg to adult in about a week in Pakistani summer heat, and a single female lays several hundred eggs. Killing adults cannot outpace that.

What works, in order of impact:

  1. Find and remove the breeding site. Bins, drains, spillage under equipment, animal waste, standing water, rotting vegetation. This is where the result comes from
  2. Exclude them — door seals, mesh on openable windows, strip curtains or air curtains on doorways used constantly
  3. Then capture what still gets in

A useful diagnostic: if flies return within a day or two of clearing them, the source is on your property. If they arrive mainly when a door opens, it is outside — a neighbouring bin store, drain or open ground — and exclusion matters more than treatment.

For food businesses this is not optional; it is inspected.

Why do ants come inside during monsoon?

Rain floods their nests. They are not coming for your kitchen so much as escaping water — and then finding food once inside.

Ant colonies live in soil, under paving and beside foundations. Heavy rain saturates those spaces, so the colony moves upward and inward, often into wall cavities and under floors. This is why ants appear suddenly, in numbers, within a day of heavy rain.

Once inside, food keeps them. The trail you see is a scent route between the nest and whatever they found.

What works:

  • Bait, not spray. Workers carry bait back to the nest, which treats the colony. Spraying the trail kills the visible workers and leaves the nest producing more
  • Remove the food — sugar, honey and open packets into sealed containers, spillage wiped promptly
  • Wipe the trail with soapy water to break the scent route
  • Seal entry gaps around windows, doors and pipework

Treating before monsoon, around the perimeter, prevents most of it.

Are ants dangerous to children?

Most household ants in Pakistan are a nuisance rather than a danger. The exceptions are the biting and stinging species, which can genuinely upset a small child.

Common kitchen ants do not bite meaningfully. What they do is walk across drains, waste and then food — so the real issue is contamination of anything left uncovered.

Biting and stinging species, more often encountered outdoors or in gardens, cause sharp pain and small raised welts. Uncomfortable rather than dangerous for most children, but worth attention.

Seek medical advice if a child has many bites at once, swelling spreads beyond the bite area, or there is any difficulty breathing or facial swelling — that is an allergic reaction and needs help immediately.

Practical steps: keep food covered and stored sealed, wipe spillage promptly, check play areas and sandpits for nests, and keep sweet drinks covered outdoors.

Treatment near children uses bait placed out of reach rather than spraying surfaces they touch.

How do I get rid of fruit flies quickly?

Clean the drain, not the kitchen. Adults live only days — if you stop the breeding, the problem ends within about a week.

In order, starting today:

  1. Find the source. Tape clear plastic over each drain overnight; flies trapped underneath in the morning identify it
  2. Clean the drain film — the residue on the pipe wall, not just flushing water through. This is the actual breeding site in most homes
  3. Empty and wash the bin, including the rim and base
  4. Refrigerate or remove ripe fruit for a week
  5. Check the overlooked spots — under the fridge, beside the cooker, mop heads, plant trays, and bottles left for recycling
  6. Set a simple trap — vinegar in a cup with a drop of dish soap, covered with pierced plastic — to clear remaining adults

What does not work: spraying the room. Adults are killed, the breeding site is untouched, and a new generation emerges in days.

If it persists after the drains are clean, there is a second source — often a leak under a unit.
