No, and no pest control company should tell you it is. Those are standards that certify a food business — not its pest control provider.

What pest control documents does a BRC or AIB audit require?
An auditor is checking whether you can prove control, not whether the site is spotless on the day. That proof is a document set.
At minimum, expect to produce:
- A documented pest control programme — scope, frequency, responsibilities
- A current device map matching what is physically on site
- Dated inspection records for every visit
- Defined action levels — the threshold at which a finding is escalated
- Trend analysis showing findings over time, with evidence of what was done in response
- An approved materials list with matching safety data sheets
- Technician competency records
- Corrective actions raised, actioned and signed off
- A site risk assessment justifying the service frequency
Item 5 is where most sites lose points. Eighteen months of inspection sheets with no trend analysis attached is just a pile of paper, not a programme.

Why do sites actually fail the pest control section of an audit?
Very rarely because pests were found. Almost always because the records could not show the problem was detected, escalated and closed out.
Finding evidence of pest activity is normal and auditors know it. What they are testing is whether your system noticed it and responded. A site with three documented findings, all investigated and closed, scores better than a site with none recorded and obvious activity in the corner.
What goes wrong most often:
- Device map does not match the devices actually on site
- Monitoring records complete, trend analysis missing
- Findings recorded with no corrective action against them
- Action levels never defined, so nothing ever formally triggers
- Service frequency chosen at random rather than from a risk assessment
- Gaps in the record where visits were missed and never rescheduled
In short: the paperwork is not admin around the real work. For an auditor, the paperwork is the evidence of the real work.

Can we manage pest control in-house instead of using a contractor?
Some standards permit it, but you have to prove more — you have to evidence everything an external provider would, and do it about your own work.
If you go in-house you must be able to show technician competency and training records, controlled storage and handling of materials, the same monitoring and trend records, and some form of independent review so the person doing the work is not the only person judging it.
Independent review is where in-house programmes usually come apart at audit. It is difficult to show you are independent when the same team sets the action levels, records the findings and decides whether they were closed.
Most export-facing sites in Pakistan use an external provider for exactly this reason. A workable middle path is in-house daily checks and housekeeping, with a contracted provider for the scheduled programme, the trend analysis and the audit documentation.

How often should a food plant be serviced for pests?
Monthly is the common baseline for food manufacturing, with higher-risk sites at fortnightly or weekly. What matters to an auditor is that the frequency is justified by a documented risk assessment rather than chosen without a reason.
Factors that push frequency up: open product lines, a history of findings, older buildings with structural gaps, sites next to open ground or waste, high goods-in volume, and seasonal peaks.
In Pakistan the seasonal argument is worth writing into the assessment explicitly. Stored product activity climbs through the warmer months, and rodent movement indoors peaks around December and January. A programme that increases frequency ahead of those peaks is easier to defend than a flat schedule.
Whatever you choose, do not miss visits. A gap in the record with no reschedule is a finding in itself.

What is an action level or threshold?
A written trigger that says a defined level of activity in a defined area requires a defined response. For example, any activity at all in a processing zone triggers a same-day investigation.
It matters because it changes what your programme is managed against. Without action levels you are reacting to complaints, and a complaint is somebody noticing before you did. With them, the programme runs to limits you set in advance.
An auditor reads action levels as evidence of control. They want to see the threshold written down, the readings recorded against it, and — where a threshold was crossed — what you did about it and when.
Set them by zone rather than site-wide. What is acceptable at an external perimeter station is not acceptable next to an open production line.

Does a pest sighting during an audit automatically fail the audit?
No, not automatically — but where it was found matters enormously, and so does whether your records show the system was already working.
Evidence of activity in a production zone is treated seriously and can become a major or critical finding, depending on the standard and the location. The same evidence at an external perimeter station is routine and expected.
What changes the grading is your documentation. A site that can show the finding was already detected, logged, investigated and acted on is demonstrating a working programme. A site with no record of it is demonstrating that nobody was looking.
This is why hiding a finding before an audit is the worst possible move. Auditors expect to see findings. What they do not expect is a clean sheet that does not match what they can see in front of them.

What is a device map and why does every auditor ask for it?
A numbered plan of your site showing every monitoring device and where it sits. It is the first thing an auditor checks, because it is the fastest way to test whether the programme is real.
The test is simple: they pick a number off the map and go and find it. If station 14 is not where the map says, or the map shows 40 stations and there are 36 on site, the finding writes itself — and it casts doubt on every record built on top of it.
A usable map shows:
- Every device, numbered, with its type
- Internal and external devices distinguished
- Zones marked, so action levels can differ by area
- A revision date, updated whenever a device moves
The most common failure is not a missing device — it is a map that was accurate two years ago. Update it whenever anything changes and note the date.

What counts as a proper corrective action?
Not “treated the area”. A corrective action names what was found, what caused it, what was done, who did it, when, and how you confirmed it worked.
Compare the two entries an auditor might read:
Weak: “Activity in store room. Treated.”
Acceptable: “Station 12, store room — activity recorded 4 March. Cause: gap under external door, sweep worn through. Action: door sweep replaced 6 March by maintenance. Monitoring increased to weekly for four weeks. No further activity recorded to 3 April. Closed 3 April.”
The second one demonstrates a system. It shows the finding was detected, the root cause identified, a physical fix applied, verification carried out and the issue closed with evidence.
The recurring weakness we see is the root cause being skipped. Treating activity without asking how it got there means the same finding returns, and a pattern of repeat findings is worse at audit than one properly closed.

Who should sign off the pest control records?
A named person on your side, not just the technician. An auditor wants to see that someone at the site read the report and acted on it.
A common weakness: files full of service reports signed only by the pest control company. That proves a visit happened. It does not prove anybody at the site engaged with what was found.
Set it up so that:
- A named site contact countersigns each report
- Findings requiring action are assigned to a person with a date
- Someone at management level reviews the trend analysis periodically and records that they did
- Cover arrangements exist for when that person is away, so there are no gaps
For food and pharmaceutical sites, name the roles in your SOP rather than the individuals. People change jobs; the responsibility should not disappear with them.

How long should we keep pest control records?
Long enough to show a full seasonal cycle plus your standard’s retention requirement — in practice, keep at least two to three years and check what your certification body specifies.
Why the length matters: trend analysis needs a full year to show a pattern, and an auditor comparing this year against last is looking for whether your control is improving, stable or drifting. One year of records answers half the question.
What to retain, not just the service reports:
- Dated inspection records and device readings
- Trend analysis and the review notes attached to it
- Corrective actions with close-out evidence
- Device map revisions, so a change of layout is traceable
- Approved materials list and safety data sheets in force at the time
- Technician competency records
Digital storage is fine and usually better, provided it can be produced during an inspection without someone searching for a password.

What does trend analysis actually mean?
Plotting your monitoring counts over time, comparing them against your action levels, and writing down what you concluded. Records on their own are not trend analysis.
This is the single most common gap we see. A site has eighteen months of inspection sheets filed neatly and no analysis attached — which reads to an auditor as data nobody looked at.
A usable trend review shows:
- Counts by device or zone, over time, in a form you can see at a glance
- The action level marked, so exceedances are obvious
- A written conclusion — stable, improving, or deteriorating and why
- What changed as a result, and whether it worked
- Seasonal patterns annotated, so a monsoon rise reads as understood rather than unexplained
Do it quarterly at minimum, monthly for high-risk sites, and record who reviewed it. A named reviewer turns a filing exercise into evidence of management.

Do we need a pest control certificate?
What auditors and inspectors actually want is the programme and the records. A certificate on the wall proves a visit happened, not that pests are controlled.
Where a certificate genuinely matters: export consignments and container treatment, where the buyer or destination requires documentation to accompany the goods, and some tender or licensing submissions that ask for evidence of a contracted provider.
Where it does not: as a substitute for a documented programme. An auditor presented with only a certificate will ask for the device map, dated reports, action levels, trend analysis and corrective actions — and those are the actual evidence.

HACCP, BRCGS, AIB, FSSC — what does each expect on pests?
They differ in emphasis, not in principle. All four want a documented programme, monitoring records and evidence that findings were investigated and closed.

Who should carry out the trend review, us or the contractor?
Both, and separately. The contractor produces the data and an analysis; someone on your side reviews it and records that they did.
Why it matters: an auditor reading a trend analysis signed only by the pest company sees evidence that a supplier is doing its job. What they are looking for is evidence that your management is controlling the risk.
A workable split:
- Contractor — collects readings, plots them against action levels, writes the technical conclusion and recommendations
- Site — reviews it at a defined frequency, records who reviewed it and when, assigns any building or housekeeping actions, and tracks them to close-out
- Management — sees it at least annually as part of the wider review, with that noted in the minutes
Name the roles in your SOP rather than the individuals. People change jobs; the responsibility should not leave with them.
