What is fumigation, and is it what my house actually needs?
Real fumigation is a sealed gas treatment of an enclosed space. Most of what is sold as “fumigation” for homes in Pakistan is not fumigation at all — it is spraying, gel baiting or fogging.
The word has become a general term here for any pest treatment, which is fine in conversation but confusing when you are comparing quotes. What matters is what will actually be done at your property.
- Gel baiting — small placements in hiding places. The usual correct answer for kitchen cockroaches.
- Residual treatment — applied to surfaces and entry routes.
- Fogging — a fine mist for flying insects. Kills what is in the air at that moment.
- Soil treatment — for deemak, injected into the ground.
- True fumigation — a sealed space, gas, nobody inside, and a clearance check before re-entry. Used for containers, warehouses and stored commodities.
A family home almost never needs true fumigation. If someone offers it for a flat and says you do not need to leave, they are not doing what they are describing.

When does a container or warehouse genuinely need fumigation?
When there is a confirmed infestation inside a commodity, when the space can actually be sealed, or when an export or receiving requirement calls for it.
Export shipments are the most common reason. Some destination countries require treatment and documentation before goods are accepted, and that certificate has to come from work done properly.
Where fumigation is not the answer: as a routine preventive measure, in a space that cannot be sealed, or as a substitute for proofing and goods-in checks. Fumigate a warehouse with an open loading bay and the same insects arrive with the next delivery.
It is a controlled operation with real safety requirements — sealing, keeping people out, and a clearance check before anyone goes back in. Clearance is a measurement, not somebody’s opinion. Any provider treating that casually should not be doing the work.

Is fumigation safe for my family and how long must we stay out?
A true fumigation requires everyone to leave, and nobody returns until the space has been cleared and checked. If a provider says otherwise, they are not carrying out a fumigation.
This is where the loose use of the word becomes a safety issue. Most home treatments sold as “fumigation” are gel baiting, residual treatment or fogging, and those have much shorter or no vacating requirements. A genuine sealed gas treatment is a different operation with different rules.
For a sealed fumigation, expect the space to be sealed, people and pets excluded for the stated period, and a clearance check before re-entry. Clearance is a measurement, not somebody deciding it smells fine.
Whatever the treatment, get the re-entry time in writing from the technician who did the work, and tell us in advance if anyone in the house is pregnant, asthmatic or immunosuppressed, or if you keep birds or fish.

Who provides the best fumigation services in Pakistan?
For fumigation specifically, judge a provider on sealing, exclusion and clearance — the three things that make it safe and effective. Most companies advertising “fumigation” in Pakistan are not doing it at all.
Genuine fumigation is a sealed gas treatment of an enclosed space, used for shipping containers, warehouses, silos and stored commodities, often for export requirements. It is not what a family home needs, and anyone offering it for a flat while telling you that you need not leave is describing something else.
What a top-rated provider does:
- Seals the space properly before starting
- Excludes people and animals for the full stated period
- Carries out a clearance check — a measurement, not an opinion — before re-entry
- Issues documentation your buyer, exporter or auditor will accept

How much does fumigation cost?
Quoted after survey, because what people call fumigation covers several completely different jobs.
Before comparing prices, establish what is actually being proposed. A home treatment sold as “fumigation” is normally gel baiting or a residual treatment, and should be priced as such. A genuine sealed gas treatment for a container, warehouse or commodity is a different operation with different costs and safety requirements.
What moves the figure: the size and sealability of the space, the pest and how far it has spread, whether documentation is required for an export or receiving requirement, and access and timing.
The one service with a published rate is termite work, because it genuinely scales with area: pre-construction PKR 12–18 per square foot, post-construction homes from PKR 20,000.
Ask any provider what method they are quoting for. If they cannot name it, the price means nothing.
Please read: these are reference prices, not a quotation. Figures are indicative only and your proposed price may be higher or lower after a site survey. Nothing here is an offer or a fixed rate — ask for a written quotation once someone has seen the property.

What do we have to do before and after a fumigation?
Everything living leaves, the space is sealed, and nobody returns until a clearance check has been done. That is not a formality — it is the whole safety basis of the job.
Before:
- All people, pets, birds, fish and plants out of the space
- Food, medicine and anything consumable removed or sealed as instructed
- Openings sealed — doors, vents, gaps, shared ducts identified in advance
- Neighbours or adjoining units notified where the building is connected
- Access controlled, with signage and a named person responsible
After: the space is ventilated for the specified period, a clearance check is carried out, and only then is re-entry allowed. Clearance is a measurement, not somebody deciding it smells fine.
If a provider offers fumigation for an occupied flat and says you need not leave, they are not carrying out a fumigation.

Should we get pest control done before moving into a new house?
Yes — and an empty house is by far the best time to do it. Treatment is faster, reaches everywhere, and you move into a home that is already protected.
With no furniture in the way, the technician can reach the places that matter and are normally blocked: skirting and wall junctions, cabinet voids, behind fitted units, floor drains, and every corner of every room. Once you have moved in, half of that is under a bed or behind a wardrobe.
What is worth doing before you move:
- Termite (deemak) treatment. If the soil was not treated during construction, this is the moment. Reference rate for homes: from PKR 20,000. If the house is still being built, treating the soil is PKR 12–18 per square foot and protects the property for far longer.
- A general treatment of the whole property while it is empty.
- Proofing — door sweeps, sealed pipe openings, meshed drains and vents, so nothing walks in later.
- Fill the floor gully traps before you move in. A dry trap is an open pipe from the drainage.
One clarification on wording: this is a treatment, not a fumigation. Sealed gas fumigation is for containers, warehouses and infested commodities, and a home does not need it.
If the property was treated during construction, ask the builder which of the three stages were done — initial, retaining walls and floor. A barrier missing one is not continuous.

Fumigation or pest control — what is the difference?
In Pakistan “fumigation” is used loosely to mean any spraying. Genuine fumigation is a different process entirely, and knowing which one you are buying prevents most wasted money.
| What is usually called fumigation | Genuine fumigation | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Liquid spraying of surfaces | A gas filling a sealed space |
| Space | Occupied rooms, vacate briefly | Sealed and evacuated entirely |
| Typical use | Homes, offices, general pests | Containers, warehouses, stored grain, export cargo |
| Duration | An hour or two | 24 to 72 hours including aeration |
| Paperwork | Service report | A fumigation certificate |
So if a home visit is described as fumigation, it almost certainly means a residual spray — which is the right treatment for a house. The word is just being used loosely.
Where the difference matters absolutely: export cargo. If a buyer or shipping line requires a fumigation certificate, a spray service cannot produce one.

What is phosphine fumigation and when is it needed?
Phosphine fumigation treats a sealed space with a fumigant gas so it penetrates throughout the commodity — used for stored grain, export consignments and containers, and issued with a certificate.
It is genuinely different from spraying. The gas reaches through bulk product and into packaging in a way no surface application can, which is why it is the accepted method for stored commodities.
When it is required:
- Export consignments where the buyer or destination country requires a fumigation certificate
- Stored grain, rice, pulses and dry commodities with stored product pest activity
- Shipping containers before loading
- Timber and packaging materials subject to international requirements
The process requires sealing, an exposure period and full aeration before anyone re-enters — commonly 24 to 72 hours in total. It is carried out by trained operators with monitoring and controlled access throughout, and no untrained person should be near a sealed space.
You receive a certificate on completion. If a buyer requires one, a spray service cannot produce it.

Is fumigation safe for food facilities?
Yes, when carried out properly — and “properly” means the aeration period is never shortened for anyone’s schedule.
What makes it safe:
- The space is sealed and fully evacuated for the whole exposure period
- Trained operators with monitoring equipment, and controlled access throughout
- Full aeration before re-entry, confirmed by monitoring rather than by the clock
- Signage and access control so nobody enters during treatment
- Documentation, including the certificate on completion
This is precisely why fumigation is not a job for untrained people and why an occupied building is never fumigated. The gas is the point — and the controls around it are what make it acceptable.
Timing: sealing, exposure and aeration commonly take 24 to 72 hours in total. Any provider willing to compress that is putting your staff at risk, and you should decline.
Used correctly, fumigation leaves no residue on the commodity and is the accepted method for stored goods and export consignments worldwide.
