They are a monitoring tool for spotting a trend, not a control method for removing a population. A site relying on them to “catch” its way out of an infestation has misunderstood what they do.

Their value is early warning and location. Catch numbers rising in one zone tell you something is developing and roughly where, well before anyone sees insects in product. That lets you investigate while it is still small.

Fumigation is for treating an infested commodity or a sealed space. It is not a routine hygiene measure, and it does nothing to stop the problem returning.

Through stock rotation, cleaning down residues, and monitoring — not through repeated treatment of the building.

Stored product insects live and breed inside the commodity, so a spray around the walls never reaches them. Control comes from four things:

1. Strict FIFO rotation. Old stock at the back is where infestations start and stay hidden.
2. Residue removal. Spillage in machinery, under racking and in floor joints is a permanent breeding reservoir. This is the step most mills skip.
3. Goods-in inspection. Most infestations arrive with a delivery, not through a door.

By closing the openings and removing the roosting points. Birds in a food or packaging store are a contamination finding, not a nuisance.

Leave a clear inspection aisle around the perimeter and keep everything off the floor and away from walls. If nobody can see the wall base, nobody can find the problem.

The working rules:

Cold slows insects but does not stop the problem. The risk moves to the warm edges — loading bays, ante-rooms, door seals and the plant room.

Isolate it before it spreads, then work out whether it arrived with the delivery or came from the building. The answer changes what you fix.

1. Quarantine the affected batch — move it away from other stock, do not open more of it than necessary

3. Record it — batch, supplier, date received, what was found, where
4. Check your monitoring data — a rise in that zone beforehand points to the building; no prior rise points to the delivery

The treated area must be sealed and empty of people for the exposure and aeration period — but that rarely means the whole site stops.

How disruption is usually kept down:

• Sectioning — treating one warehouse, silo or store at a time while the rest operates
• Scheduling into planned downtime — shutdowns, maintenance windows or holidays
• Weekend work, so exposure and aeration finish before Monday
