Preparation & Aftercare

What to do before the technician arrives, when it is safe to return, when to clean, and what is normal to see in the days after a treatment.

I am seeing more cockroaches since the treatment. Is that normal?

Yes, for the first few days it is expected and it is a sign the treatment is working.

Cockroaches that have picked up a non-repellent product leave their hiding place and become visible while they are dying, including during daylight when you would not normally see them. You are watching the hidden population come out, not a new infestation arriving.

What should happen next: visible activity falls away over roughly one to two weeks, then there is often a small second wave at two to four weeks as protected eggs hatch. The follow-up visit is timed for that.

Call your provider if activity is still climbing after two weeks, if you are seeing them in rooms that were never affected, or if you find live insects in a treated cabinet a month later.

What paperwork should I receive after a visit?

At minimum a service report naming what was treated, where, with which product, and what you should do next. For a business, much more.

A home visit should leave you with the date and technician, the target pest, the areas treated, the product used with its concentration, re-entry and cleaning instructions, and the follow-up date.

A commercial site should also hold a documented pest control programme, a current device map, dated inspection records, defined action levels, trend analysis showing findings over time with evidence of response, an approved chemical list with safety data sheets, technician competency records, and corrective actions signed off.

That last set is what an auditor asks for first. Sites rarely fail because pests were found — they fail because the records could not show the problem was detected, escalated and closed out.

How long does a pest control visit take?

A normal home takes about one to two hours. A restaurant or office takes two to four. A large warehouse or factory is planned as a half or full day.

What drives the time is access, not floor area. Pulling out kitchen units, opening drain covers and reaching equipment voids is where the work happens, and a site where everything is clear is far quicker than one where the technician is moving stock first.

What you can do to speed it up:

  • Empty the kitchen cabinets before the visit for cockroach work
  • Clear access to skirting, under sinks and behind appliances
  • Have someone available who knows the building and its problem areas

Commercial visits are scheduled outside trading hours, so the time taken does not cost you business.

How soon will I see results after the treatment?

It depends on the method, and the fastest-looking option is usually the weakest one.

  • Fogging — visible within minutes, because it kills what is flying at that moment. It also does the least to solve the problem.
  • Residual treatment — activity drops over several days as pests cross the treated surfaces.
  • Gel baiting — deliberately slower. You may see MORE cockroaches for two or three days as they leave hiding places, then a steady fall over one to two weeks.
  • Rodent programme — activity typically drops within one to two weeks, with proofing deciding whether it stays down.
  • Termite soil barrier — no visible change. The barrier stops new entry; it is not something you watch working.

Call your provider if activity is still climbing after two weeks, or if you see it in rooms that were never affected.

What if I am not satisfied with the treatment?

Tell us before you pay anyone else. Most dissatisfaction is either the follow-up visit being due, or something genuinely missed — and both are fixable.

Before you call, note three things: what you are still seeing, where, and at what time of day. That tells a technician far more than “it did not work” and often identifies the missed area immediately.

What usually turns out to be happening:

  • Second generation. Eggs hatching at two to four weeks is expected and is what the follow-up visit is for.
  • A missed area — a drain, a void, an outbuilding, a neighbouring flat.
  • Surfaces cleaned too soon, removing the treatment.
  • Wrong expectation — a termite barrier produces no visible change at all.

Can we stay at home while the treatment is being done?

For most home treatments, yes — you leave the room being worked on and return once surfaces are dry.

How it usually works:

  • Gel and bait placements — no need to leave at all. The product goes into voids and enclosed stations.
  • Targeted residual work — stay out of that room until surfaces are dry and it has been ventilated. Usually a short wait.
  • Whole-property treatment — easiest to be out for a few hours.
  • Sealed fumigation — everyone leaves for the full stated period, with a clearance check before re-entry.

Get the re-entry time in writing from the technician who did the work, rather than assuming a general figure.

Tell us beforehand about pregnancy, asthma, infants, elderly or immunosuppressed household members, and any pets, birds or fish. It changes both the product and the plan.

What should we do with food and utensils during treatment?

Seal it or move it out of the room. Anything that goes in a mouth should not be exposed while work is happening.

Move or seal: open food, fruit, bread, spices and anything in a paper or loose packet; utensils, plates and glasses left out; chopping boards; babies’ bottles and feeding equipment; pet bowls and pet food.

Can stay: sealed jars, tins, and anything inside a closed fridge or freezer.

Empty the kitchen cabinets if the job is cockroach work. The technician needs to reach the hinges, corners and voids, and those are exactly where treatment goes.

Afterwards, wipe food preparation surfaces before using them — but leave the treated edges, corners and behind-appliance areas alone for as long as the technician specifies. Cleaning those too soon removes the treatment.

How do I know if the treatment actually worked?

Judge it at the right moment for the pest, not on day two — and know what “working” looks like for each one.

  • Cockroaches — more visible for two or three days, then a steady fall over one to two weeks. Judge at the follow-up visit, after the eggs have hatched.
  • Bed bugs — biting stops within days, but confirm at three to four weeks once the second generation would have appeared.
  • Rodents — no fresh droppings after a clean-up is the clearest test. Sweep the area, then check 48 hours later.
  • Deemak — break a small section of mud tube. If it is repaired within a week there is live activity; if it stays broken, the route is dead.
  • Mosquitoes — judged by whether standing water is gone, not by how many you see on one evening.

What happens on the day of the treatment?

A walk-through, the work, then written instructions before the technician leaves.

Stage What happens
Arrival Identification, brief walk-through, confirmation of areas and any household sensitivities
Preparation Access cleared, food and utensils sealed, pets moved
Treatment Targeted work in hiding places, entry routes and drains — not open spraying of rooms
Before leaving Product name, re-entry time, cleaning instructions and follow-up date, in writing
After Service report issued; follow-up scheduled where the job needs one

Time taken: about one to two hours for a normal home, two to four for a restaurant or office, and a half or full day for a large warehouse. Access drives it more than floor area.

Ask before the technician leaves: which surfaces were treated, and when you can clean them. Washing too soon is the most common reason a treatment underperforms.
