DIY vs Professional

When shop-bought products genuinely work, when they make an infestation worse, and where the line sits between a nuisance and a real problem.

Can I do pest control myself?

For a handful of ants, the occasional fly, or a single spider — yes, and you do not need us. For anything that breeds indoors, bites people, damages the building, or has to satisfy an auditor, DIY usually costs more than it saves.

Reasonable to handle yourself: occasional ants on a trail, houseflies, spiders, a single wasp, and above all prevention — sealing gaps, fixing leaks, managing bins, and pouring water down unused floor drains through the monsoon.

Call a professional for: German cockroaches, bed bugs, rodents inside the structure, termites, wasp or hornet nests, and anything in a food, healthcare or export-facing premises.

The prevention half genuinely matters. A dried-out floor gully trap is the single most common cockroach entry route in Pakistani homes, and pouring a mug of water down each unused drain once a week costs nothing.

Why did supermarket spray make my cockroach problem worse?

Because most retail sprays are repellent, and repelling a German cockroach population scatters it deeper into the building instead of removing it.

German cockroaches live in tight hiding places — cabinet hinges, appliance motor housings, the void behind a splashback. Spraying the visible ones kills those and drives the rest into new hiding places further away, often into a neighbouring flat or a wall cavity you cannot reach. The population survives, spreads, and becomes harder to treat.

Professional cockroach work generally uses a non-repellent gel bait instead. The cockroach feeds and returns to the hiding place before dying, and the active ingredient passes through the population. It looks slower for the first few days and it is far more thorough.

If you have already sprayed, tell the technician. Residual repellent on surfaces can stop cockroaches approaching bait, and it changes where they will place it.

When is a pest problem actually urgent?

Treat it as urgent when there is a health risk, a business is exposed, or the structure is being damaged. Most other situations are better handled with a proper inspection than a same-day panic call.

Genuinely urgent: a wasp or hornet nest near an entrance or where somebody is allergic; a snake indoors; rodents in a food premises or a hospital; any live pest sighting during an audit or an inspection visit; a suspected dengue mosquito breeding site during monsoon; and termite swarmers emerging inside the building, which means an established colony rather than a new arrival.

Not urgent, but do not ignore: a few cockroaches at night, ants on a trail, a single mouse dropping. These need the right treatment, not the fastest one — and rushing usually means the species is never confirmed.

Do home remedies work for pests?

A few help at the margins. Most do nothing, and a couple make things worse. Here is the honest sort.

Genuinely useful:

  • Pouring water down unused floor drains weekly — refills the trap seal and blocks the commonest cockroach entry route in Pakistani homes
  • Emptying standing water weekly during monsoon — the single most effective dengue measure available to a household
  • Sealing gaps, fixing leaks, managing bins and storing food properly

Little to no effect: mothballs and scented powders for snakes, ultrasonic repellers, and most kitchen-cupboard sprays against an established population.

Actively harmful: repellent aerosols on German cockroaches, which scatter them deeper into the building; and spraying certain ants, which can split the colony and spread it.

Prevention at home, treatment from a professional. That split costs the least over a year.

Do ultrasonic pest repellers work?

There is no reliable evidence that plug-in ultrasonic devices control cockroaches, rodents or insects in a home.

The claim is that high-frequency sound drives pests away. In practice sound does not pass through walls or furniture, pests settle quickly to a constant noise, and independent testing has repeatedly failed to show a meaningful effect on infestations.

The real cost is not the device. It is the weeks spent believing something is being done while a cockroach population behind the cabinets keeps breeding, or termites keep working through a door frame.

Spend the same money on the things that do work: door sweeps, sealing the gaps where pipes enter walls, meshing drain outlets, and keeping water in the floor gully traps. Unglamorous, permanent, and cheaper than replacing the device every year.

When should I stop trying myself and call someone?

When it has come back twice, when you cannot find where they are coming from, or when the pest is one that gets worse if handled wrongly.

Clear signals to stop:

  • It returned after two attempts. The population is established somewhere you have not reached.
  • You are seeing them in daylight. For cockroaches and rodents that means numbers have grown enough to push some into the open.
  • Bites at night — bed bugs need a planned multi-visit treatment, and home attempts usually spread them.
  • Mud lines, hollow wood or dropped wings — deemak needs a soil barrier, never a surface spray.
  • Ants that multiply after spraying — some species split the colony when threatened.
  • Any food, healthcare or export premises — you need records as much as results.

The inspection is free, so getting it identified costs nothing even if you then handle it yourself.

Do natural remedies like vinegar, lemon or neem work?

They can move insects away from a surface for a short time. None of them remove a population, and relying on them lets a small problem become an established one.

What they realistically do: mask trails on a counter for a few hours, make a specific surface less attractive, and help with general cleanliness. What they do not do is reach the nest, the drain, the wall void or the soil, which is where the problem actually lives.

The genuinely effective free measures are physical, not herbal:

  • Water down unused floor drains weekly
  • Empty standing water weekly through monsoon
  • Seal gaps under doors and around pipes
  • Fix leaks — nearly every pest needs water before food
  • Keep bins sealed and food stored properly

Use natural cleaning if you prefer it. Just do not treat it as pest control for anything that has established itself.

What prevention actually works, that I can do myself?

Six things, all free or nearly free, and between them they prevent more than any product you can buy.

  1. Water the unused floor drains weekly. A dried-out trap is an open pipe from the drainage and the commonest cockroach route into Pakistani homes.
  2. Empty standing water weekly through monsoon. Tank lids, pot trays, cooler trays, roof drains. The strongest dengue measure available to a household.
  3. Fix leaks. Nearly every pest needs water before it needs food.
  4. Seal the gaps — under doors, around pipes, the air conditioner wall hole, drain and vent openings.
  5. Manage waste and food — bins lidded, dry goods in sealed containers, cardboard out of the house.
  6. Keep soil, timber and rubble away from the walls — this is the termite and rodent one.

Do these and you will need us less often. We would rather tell you that than sell you a treatment you did not need.

Why does pest control keep failing at my property?

Five reasons cover almost every case, and only one of them is the product.

Reason What it looks like
Wrong species identified Repeat treatments, no lasting change
Source never treated Clear for weeks, then back — usually a drain or a void
Follow-up skipped Returns at two to four weeks as eggs hatch
Surfaces cleaned too soon Treatment fades far earlier than expected
Entry point still open New arrivals replace whatever was removed

Notice what is not on the list: needing a stronger chemical. Increasing the product is the usual response and almost never the fix — with German cockroaches and some ants it makes the problem spread.

What to do instead: get the species confirmed, ask where the source is, take the follow-up visit, and close the entry points. Proofing is the item that ends the cycle.

What are the most common pest control myths?

Most of them cost money or make the problem worse. These are the ones we correct most often on site.

Myth What is actually true
A clean house cannot get pests Bed bugs arrive in luggage; termites come from soil; cleanliness helps but does not prevent
More spray means better results Repellent spray scatters German cockroaches and can split ant colonies
Mothballs keep snakes and pests away No reliable evidence, and a poisoning risk to small children
Ultrasonic plug-ins work No reliable evidence against any household pest
One visit should fix it Eggs survive; cockroaches and bed bugs need a follow-up
Cats keep rodents away They may catch a few; they do not close entry points
Seeing one means there is only one Daytime sightings usually mean an established population
Termites only eat old wood New buildings are attacked too, often before anyone looks

The pattern behind all of them: people reach for a product when the real fix is usually identification, the follow-up visit, and closing the way in.
