Where does the dengue mosquito actually breed?
In small collections of clean, still water, right next to where people live — not in dirty drains or sewers. This is the single most misunderstood point about dengue in Pakistan.
The dengue mosquito needs very little water and prefers it clean. Common breeding sites in and around a Pakistani home:
- Water tanks and overhead tanks with damaged or missing lids
- Plant pot trays, garden buckets and watering cans
- Air cooler trays and water dispenser drip trays
- Old tyres, broken pots, discarded containers and rubbish holding rainwater
- Blocked roof drains and gutters
- Construction site water — unfinished tanks, curing water, drums
Because the whole cycle from egg to biting adult takes only about a week, a container you empty weekly never produces mosquitoes. That weekly habit does more than anything else you can buy.
It also bites mostly in daylight, particularly early morning and late afternoon — which is why a bed net alone does not protect you from dengue.

When is dengue season in Pakistan?
Risk climbs with the monsoon and generally peaks from around July through September, easing as the weather cools.
The pattern follows standing water rather than the calendar: rain fills containers, warmth speeds up the cycle from egg to adult, and the population multiplies quickly. Numbers stay high for several weeks after the rain stops, because the water left behind keeps producing.
The month that matters most is the one before it starts. Clearing containers, fixing tank lids and unblocking drains in May and June prevents far more than any response in August.
Karachi’s coastal humidity supports activity over a longer stretch of the year; Lahore and Islamabad show a sharper rise and fall around the monsoon. The Pakistan Pest Pressure Index sets out how each pest moves through the year. Those figures come from field experience and known pest biology — practitioner judgement, not trapped-sample data.

The whole street was fogged but we still have mosquitoes. Why?
Fogging kills the adult mosquitoes in the air at that moment. It does nothing to the eggs and larvae sitting in water, so a new generation is flying within days.
Fogging has a real but narrow role: knocking down adult numbers quickly during an outbreak. Used on its own, it is mostly for show — and repeated street fogging with no source reduction is the most common reason people conclude “nothing works”.
What actually reduces mosquitoes, in order of impact:
- Source reduction — empty, cover or remove every container holding water, every week.
- Treating water that cannot be emptied — large tanks, ornamental water, construction water.
- Keeping them out — mesh on windows, repaired door screens.
- Fogging — last, and only for quickly killing of adults.
If a provider offers fogging alone as dengue protection, ask what they intend to do about the breeding sites. That question tells you whether they have a programme or a machine.

What can I do at home to protect my family from dengue?
Empty or cover every container holding water, once a week, every week through monsoon. That single habit does more than anything you can buy.
The dengue mosquito breeds in small amounts of clean, still water close to the house, and the full cycle from egg to biting adult takes about a week. A container emptied weekly never produces a single mosquito.
The weekly round:
- Water tank lids — sealed, not cracked or propped open
- Plant pot trays, buckets and watering cans — emptied
- Air cooler trays and fridge or dispenser drip trays
- Old tyres, broken pots and rubbish holding rainwater — removed
- Roof drains and gutters — unblocked
Alongside that: mesh on windows, repaired door screens, and covering up during early morning and late afternoon, when this mosquito bites most. A bed net alone does not protect you from dengue, because it is a daytime biter.

What is the best treatment for dengue mosquitoes in Pakistan?
Removing the water they breed in, treating the water that cannot be removed, and only then dealing with the adults. Fogging on its own is the least effective part and the part most often sold as the whole answer.
In order of what actually works:
- Source reduction — empty, cover or remove every container holding water, weekly. Tank lids, pot trays, cooler trays, tyres, blocked gutters.
- Treating standing water that cannot be emptied — large tanks, ornamental water, construction water.
- Exclusion — window mesh, repaired door screens.
- Fogging — last, and only for knocking down adult numbers quickly during an outbreak.
The reason order matters: the full cycle from egg to biting adult takes about a week, so fogging alone is replaced within days by the next generation coming out of water nobody touched.
The dengue mosquito bites mainly in daylight, so a bed net does not protect you from it. Risk climbs through the monsoon and generally peaks July to September.

Do mosquito coils, sprays and plug-ins actually work?
They give short-term relief in the room you are in. None of them reduce the mosquito population, because none of them touch the water where the next generation is growing.
- Coils and vaporisers — help in an enclosed room while burning. Ventilate; do not use them in a closed room with an infant.
- Aerosol sprays — kill what is flying at that moment, nothing more.
- Repellents on skin — genuinely effective for personal protection, and the most useful item on this list during dengue season.
- Bed nets — good against night-biting mosquitoes, but the dengue mosquito bites in daylight, so a net alone does not protect against it.
The thing that actually reduces numbers is removing standing water weekly. A container emptied every week never produces a mosquito, because the cycle from egg to adult takes about seven days.
Use the products for comfort. Use source reduction for control.

How do we control mosquitoes around an office or commercial building?
Find and remove the water on your own site first. Most commercial mosquito problems are produced within the boundary, not blown in.
Where it collects on a commercial property:
- Roof drains, gutters and flat-roof pooling
- Water tanks and overhead tanks with damaged or missing lids
- Air conditioning condensate trays and drip lines
- Landscaping — planters, ornamental water, irrigation pooling
- Construction and maintenance areas — drums, curing water, unfinished tanks
- Basement sumps and lift pits
Assign a weekly walk to a named person with a checklist. The cycle from egg to biting adult takes about a week, so anything emptied weekly never produces mosquitoes.
Fogging has a place for rapid knockdown during an outbreak, but on its own it is replaced within days by the next generation coming out of water nobody touched.

Why do we get bitten indoors during the day?
Because the dengue mosquito is a daytime biter that lives indoors, close to where people are. It is not the same insect as the one that bothers you at night.
It rests in dark, still places inside the house — under furniture, behind curtains, in wardrobes, behind doors, among hanging clothes — and bites most in early morning and late afternoon.
That has three practical consequences:
- A bed net does not protect you from it, because you are not asleep when it bites.
- It is breeding within a few metres of you, in clean standing water, not in a distant drain.
- Indoor clutter matters — fewer dark resting places means fewer mosquitoes waiting in the room.
Check the containers first: tank lids, pot trays, cooler trays, roof drains. Weekly, every week, through the monsoon.

What does a proper mosquito control service include?
A survey of breeding sites, treatment of water that cannot be emptied, exclusion work, and only then fogging. A service that arrives, fogs and leaves is selling you the least effective part.
What a full programme covers:
- Site survey — tanks, trays, roof drains, condensate lines, planters, sumps, construction water
- Source reduction plan — what to empty, what to cover, what to repair, and who checks it weekly
- Larviciding of standing water that genuinely cannot be removed
- Exclusion — window mesh, door screens
- Fogging for rapid knockdown of adults during peak risk
- Follow-up through the season, because the cycle is about a week

What should we watch for during dengue season?
Our job is preventing the mosquito, not diagnosing illness — but everyone in a household should know when to seek medical help quickly.
Dengue commonly presents with sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea and a rash. See a doctor promptly for a high fever during the season, and urgently for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from gums or nose, or unusual drowsiness. We are not medical practitioners, and this is general awareness rather than clinical advice.
What we can do is remove the source. The dengue mosquito breeds in small collections of clean, still water within metres of the house, and the cycle from egg to biting adult takes about a week — so a container emptied weekly never produces one.
Weekly through monsoon: tank lids, pot trays, cooler trays, roof drains, tyres and containers. It bites in daylight, so a bed net alone does not protect you.

What is dengue fumigation, and does it work?
“Dengue fumigation” almost always means fogging or spraying for adult mosquitoes. It helps for a few days and does nothing about the water the next generation is growing in.
It is worth understanding what you are buying, because this is the most oversold service in Pakistani pest control during monsoon.
| What is sold | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Dengue fogging / fumigation | Kills adults flying at that moment | Hours to days |
| Larviciding | Treats water that cannot be emptied | Weeks, per treated site |
| Source reduction | Removes the breeding water entirely | Permanent, if maintained |
| Screening and mesh | Keeps them out of the building | Permanent |
A proper dengue programme does all four, in that reverse order of importance: source reduction first, fogging last. For vector control work we select WHO-recommended formulations and name the product on your report.
The single most effective thing you can do costs nothing: empty or cover every container holding water, weekly. The cycle from egg to biting adult is about seven days.
