I spray aerosol every day but the cockroaches keep coming back. Why?
Because the aerosol only kills the cockroaches you can see, and the ones you can see are a small fraction of the population. The rest are inside cabinet hinges, behind the fridge motor, under the sink, or down the drain line — and the spray never reaches them.
There is a second problem. Most tin sprays are repellent. The cockroaches feel it and move away from the treated area rather than dying in it. So daily spraying slowly pushes the population deeper into the building — into wall voids, into the flat next door, into places you now cannot treat at all.
You end up spending on a tin every week, killing ten insects a night, while the breeding group behind the cabinet is untouched and growing. That is why it feels like it never ends.
The treatment that works targets the hiding place — where they live and breed — not the floor you can see.

Does the cockroach gel from the general store actually work?
Gel is the right idea, but shop gel usually fails for three reasons that have nothing to do with the gel itself.
- Placement. Most people put it on the floor or along the skirting. Gel has to go where cockroaches actually travel and shelter — inside cabinet hinges, the gap behind the fridge, under the sink lip, along the top edge of a cupboard. Dozens of small dots in the right places beats a long line in the wrong one.
- You sprayed first. If there is repellent aerosol residue on the surface, cockroaches avoid the whole area — including your gel. This is the most common reason shop gel “does not work”. Spray and gel cancel each other out.
- Quantity and age. A single small tube cannot cover an established kitchen population, and old or heat-damaged gel dries out and stops being attractive.
If you have a light, recent problem and you place it properly without spraying, shop gel can genuinely help. An established German cockroach population in a kitchen needs more than gel alone — that job needs every hiding place found and treated.

Why do cockroaches come back every year in Karachi even after treatment?
Because in Karachi the main source is usually the drainage system, not your kitchen — and drains are shared.
Coastal humidity keeps drain-breeding species active close to year round here, unlike Lahore or Islamabad where there is a real winter drop. American cockroaches live in the sewerage and come up; treating your kitchen removes the visitors and leaves the source untouched.
Two things make it repeat annually:
- Dried-out floor gully traps. The water seal in an unused floor drain evaporates in a few weeks of heat and becomes an open pipe from the sewer into your room. This is the single most common entry route in Pakistani homes and it costs nothing to fix — pour a mug of water down every unused drain once a week.
- Shared risers in apartment buildings. If your neighbours are untreated, your flat is repopulated from theirs. In a block, the connected flats need treating together for a lasting result.
Rain makes it sharply worse because flooding pushes the existing drain population upward — it does not create new cockroaches.

How is lal beg (لال بیگ) fumigation done, and how long does it take?
Lal beg is the Urdu word for cockroach. Most people ask for “cockroach fumigation”, but for a home the right method is gel, not gas.
The technician finds where they hide — cabinet hinges, behind the fridge, under the sink, inside the drain — and puts small dots of gel in those places. The cockroach eats the gel, goes back to its hiding place, and the effect passes through the group. That is why gel works better than spraying, even though it looks slower in the first few days.
Time needed: the visit itself takes about one to two hours for a normal flat. You will see dead cockroaches for a few days, then activity drops over one to two weeks. A follow-up visit at two to four weeks clears the ones that hatch from eggs.
Real gas fumigation is only used for sealed spaces such as shipping containers and warehouses, not for a family home.

What is the best cockroach treatment in Pakistan?
Gel baiting placed in hiding places, combined with drain treatment and a follow-up visit. Not spraying. The right answer depends on the species, which is why identification comes first.
German cockroach — small, two dark stripes behind the head, breeds indoors in kitchens. Gel bait works because the insect feeds and returns to the group before the effect appears. Repellent spray scatters them deeper into the building and makes it worse.
American cockroach — large, reddish, lives in drainage and visits you. Treating the kitchen removes the visitors and leaves the source untouched. Drains and entry points are the actual job.
Whichever species, three things decide success: the hiding places are found and treated, the drains are included, and somebody returns at two to four weeks to deal with what hatches from egg cases. A single visit routinely looks successful for a month and then fails.
In Karachi add one free habit: pour water down unused floor drains weekly. A dried-out gully trap is an open pipe from the sewer into your kitchen.

How do I get rid of cockroaches permanently?
“Permanently” is possible for the population inside your property, but no treatment stops new ones arriving. What lasts is removing the breeding group and closing the routes back in.
Any company promising permanent freedom from cockroaches is promising something no treatment delivers. What a good job actually achieves:
- The breeding group is removed — not just the ones you saw, but the group living in cabinet hinges, appliance housings and voids.
- The egg cases are accounted for — they survive most treatments, so a follow-up at two to four weeks is part of the job, not an upsell.
- The route in is closed — drain gully seals kept wet, gaps around pipes sealed, shared riser openings closed in apartments.
- The food supply goes — grease behind equipment, debris in voids, cardboard storage.
Do those four and a home stays clear for a long time. Skip the fourth and the population rebuilds no matter how good the treatment was.

Are cockroaches dangerous to health?
Yes. They are a recognised contamination and allergy risk, which is why food and healthcare premises treat any sighting as serious rather than cosmetic.
Two separate risks:
Contamination. Cockroaches move between drains, waste and food surfaces, carrying bacteria on their bodies and legs and leaving droppings on surfaces and stored food. This is the reason a sighting in a kitchen is treated as urgent.
Allergens. Cockroach droppings, shed skins and body fragments are a well-documented indoor allergen and a recognised asthma trigger, particularly for children in dense urban housing. Ordinary cleaning does not remove it once it has built up in voids, which is where deep cleaning belongs alongside treatment.
The practical point for a home: a small number seen at night is not an emergency, but it is not something to live with either. The population behind the cabinets is always larger than what you see.

How much does cockroach treatment cost?
Quoted after a survey, because the price follows the species and the size of the infestation rather than the number of rooms.
What moves the figure:
- Species. A German cockroach population breeding inside kitchen cabinets is more work than American cockroaches arriving up a drain.
- How far it has gone. A recent problem in one kitchen is a different job from an established population through a whole flat.
- Visits required. Any honest quote includes a follow-up at two to four weeks for what hatches from egg cases.
- Drains and shared risers. In apartment blocks the building may need treating, not just your flat.
Be wary of a firm price given over the phone. Without knowing the species, it is a guess — and the usual way to make that guess cheap is a low dose or leaving the drains untreated.
The inspection is free, and you get a written scope you can compare against anyone else.

What do cockroach eggs look like, and what should I do with them?
A brown, seed-shaped case about 8–10 mm long, often tucked into a corner or still attached to the female. Each one holds roughly 15 to 40 young.
Finding egg cases is the single clearest sign that cockroaches are breeding inside your property rather than visiting from a drain. Look for them behind and under kitchen cabinets, in appliance motor housings, along cupboard hinges, behind the splashback and inside stored cardboard.
Why it matters for treatment: the case is hardened and protects the young from most treatments. That is why a single visit looks successful for two to four weeks and then fails — the adults died, the eggs did not, and the new generation matured.
If you find them, vacuum them up and dispose of the bag outside immediately rather than crushing them. Then tell the technician where you found them; it tells them exactly where the hiding place is.

Why is there a musty smell in my kitchen?
A persistent oily, musty smell in a kitchen or cupboard usually means a large, established cockroach population — not a few visitors.
The smell comes from the secretions and droppings they leave along the routes they travel. You will notice it most in enclosed spaces: inside a cabinet, behind the fridge, in a store cupboard, or in a room that has been shut up.
Two things follow from it:
- The population is bigger than what you have seen. The smell only becomes noticeable once numbers are substantial.
- The residue itself needs removing. Droppings and shed skins are a recognised indoor allergen and an asthma trigger, particularly for children. Treatment kills the insects; cleaning the voids removes what they left behind.
This is where deep cleaning genuinely belongs alongside treatment, rather than being an upsell.

Why are there cockroaches in my bathroom?
They are coming up the drain. Bathroom cockroaches are usually the large drain-living species rather than a kitchen population that has spread.
The route is almost always a floor gully or a commode connection. Two things let them through:
- A dried-out water seal in an unused floor drain. The water evaporates in a few weeks of heat and the trap becomes an open pipe from the drainage system.
- Unsealed gaps around the pipes behind and under the commode and basin.
The five-minute fix costs nothing: pour a mug of water down every unused floor drain once a week, and keep the drain covers seated properly. Through the monsoon, do it more often.
Where the problem persists, the drain line itself needs treating rather than the bathroom surfaces. Spraying the floor removes the ones you can see and leaves the source untouched.

Which cockroach do I have?
Size and location tell you almost immediately — and the answer changes the treatment completely.
| German | American | Oriental | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size | 12–16 mm | 30–40 mm | 20–25 mm |
| Colour | Tan, two dark stripes | Reddish-brown | Dark, almost black |
| Where | Kitchen cabinets, appliances | Drains, sewers, basements | Damp, drains, ground level |
| Breeds | Indoors | In drainage | In damp areas |
| Treatment | Gel bait in hiding places | Drain treatment + proofing | Drainage + moisture control |
The one that matters most: never use repellent spray on German cockroaches. It scatters a breeding population deeper into the building and leaves residue that stops them taking bait afterwards, so it makes the correct treatment harder too.

There are cockroaches inside my fridge motor and microwave. Why?
Warmth. Appliance motor housings are warm, dark, dry and almost never cleaned — close to ideal conditions.
The usual sites: the fridge motor compartment and door seal, behind and under the microwave, inside the oven control panel, the washing machine housing, and the back of the television or set-top box.
This matters for two reasons. It explains why spraying the kitchen achieves nothing — the population is inside sealed equipment. And electronics can genuinely be damaged, because droppings and bodies short circuit boards.
What works: gel placed at the access points rather than inside the appliance, pulling units out and cleaning behind them, checking door seals, and treating the drain lines they travel along.
Never spray into an appliance or a socket.

Gel or spray for cockroaches — which works better?
Gel, in almost every kitchen. Spraying is visible and feels thorough, which is exactly why it is oversold.
| Gel bait | Residual spray | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches where they hide | Yes — they carry it back | Only surfaces you can reach |
| Kills the ones you cannot see | Yes, through the nest | No |
| Chemical in your kitchen | A few small dots, concealed | Whole surfaces |
| Need to vacate | No | Usually, briefly |
| Effect on food areas | Placed away from food contact | Requires covering everything |
| Speed | Days, then keeps working | Immediate knockdown, shorter tail |
The important point is that spraying can make a gel programme worse. Repellent spray drives cockroaches away from the bait, so combining both badly achieves less than gel alone.
Spray still has a place — heavy infestations, drains, external areas and voids. But in an occupied kitchen, concealed gel puts a fraction of the product into your home and reaches the population you never see.
Child and pet safe methods as standard. Pest Orbit Pakistan uses concealed placement over spraying wherever it works — Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. See cockroach control.

German or American cockroach — which is worse?
The German cockroach, without question. It is smaller and less alarming to look at, and far harder to remove.
| German | American | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Small, around 1.5 cm | Large, up to 4 cm |
| Where it lives | Indoors, permanently — kitchens and appliances | Drains, sewers, basements; enters from outside |
| Breeding speed | Very fast — the real problem | Much slower |
| Population size | Thousands, mostly unseen | Usually smaller numbers |
| Treatment | Programme with follow-up visits | Often resolved with treatment plus drain work |
The reason German cockroaches matter more: they complete their whole life cycle inside your kitchen and breed continuously. By the time you see one in daylight, the population behind the fittings is already large — you are seeing the overflow.
American cockroaches are more startling but usually a simpler problem, because they are coming in from drains rather than living in the room.
Identification decides the treatment, which is why it happens before anything is applied.

How did German cockroaches get into my clean kitchen?
They were carried in. German cockroaches do not walk in from outside — they arrive inside something, and cleanliness has almost nothing to do with it.
The usual routes:
- Grocery bags and cardboard boxes, particularly from a shop that has an infestation
- Second-hand appliances — microwaves, refrigerators and toasters are classic carriers, warm and full of hiding space
- Deliveries and packaging from a warehouse or restaurant supplier
- Shared walls and service ducts in flats — they travel from a neighbouring unit through pipework and cable runs
- Luggage and moved furniture
That flat scenario is worth understanding if you live in an apartment building. If a neighbouring unit is infested, your kitchen can be re-invaded no matter how well it is treated, and the lasting fix involves proofing service penetrations as well as treatment.
Cleanliness affects how fast a population grows once established. It does not determine whether one arrives.

Why does spraying make a German cockroach problem worse?
Because repellent spray scatters them. You disperse a concentrated population into new parts of the building, and lose the one thing that would have worked.
Three things go wrong:
- They spread. A colony living behind one kitchen unit moves into adjoining rooms, wall cavities and neighbouring flats. The problem gets bigger and harder to reach
- Bait stops working. Repellent residue drives them away from the gel that would have carried the treatment back to the nest — so combining spray with gel achieves less than gel alone
- Resistance builds. Repeated under-dosing with the same over-the-counter product selects for survivors
This is the single most common reason a household reports that “nothing works”. The treatment was not wrong in effort — it was the wrong method, applied repeatedly.
What works instead is concealed gel placed where they actually live, left undisturbed, with a follow-up visit timed to the hatching cycle. Less visible, far more effective.
If you have been spraying, tell the technician. It changes the plan.

Do cockroaches actually come from the rain?
No. The rain does not create them — it floods the drains and sewers they were already living in, and they come up.
American cockroaches live in drainage systems, manholes and sewer lines in large numbers all year. Heavy rain fills those spaces, and they move upward through the nearest opening, which is usually a floor drain, a sink outlet or a gap around a waste pipe.
That is why they appear suddenly, in numbers, within a day of heavy rain — and why it happens in spotless houses.
What actually reduces it:
- Fit proper drain covers and keep unused floor drains sealed
- Seal gaps around waste pipes where they pass through walls and floors
- Keep water in seldom-used drain traps, since a dry trap is an open route
- Treat the drainage system itself, not just the room
Treating indoors alone means the next heavy rain brings the next wave, because the source is outside the building.

Will covering the drains solve the cockroach problem?
It helps a great deal, and it is the first thing to do — but on its own it redirects them rather than removing them.
Blocking one route sends them to the next. If the floor drain is covered but the gap around the waste pipe behind the sink is open, they use that instead.
To be thorough, cover every route at once: floor drains, sink and basin outlets, gaps around pipework passing through walls and floors, and dry traps in rooms that are seldom used.
Then treat the drainage system itself, so the population living there is reduced rather than merely excluded. Proofing plus treatment is what holds through a monsoon; either alone does not.
For a building with shared drainage — a flat, a plaza, a housing society — the common lines matter more than any individual unit. One treated flat above an untreated shared system will keep seeing them.

How many treatments are needed to get rid of cockroaches?
Usually two or three visits over four to six weeks. Anyone promising one visit for an established population is not accounting for the eggs.
The reason is biological rather than commercial. Cockroach egg cases are protected and survive treatment that kills adults. They hatch over the following weeks, so a second visit exists specifically to meet that generation.
| Situation | Typical programme |
|---|---|
| A few American cockroaches from drains | One visit plus drain treatment and proofing |
| Established German cockroaches in a kitchen | Two to three visits, gel-based |
| Heavy infestation, long-standing | Three or more, with follow-up monitoring |
| Restaurant or commercial kitchen | Ongoing programme, not a one-off |
Seeing activity after the first visit is expected and does not mean it failed — tell us rather than spraying, because spray scatters them and interferes with the bait.
What shortens the programme: keeping surfaces free of food residue, fixing leaks, and not cleaning the treated areas.

Why do cockroaches appear in a clean house?
Because they are not coming from your kitchen hygiene — they are coming from the drainage system, and that is outside your control.
American cockroaches live in sewers, manholes and drainage lines in large numbers. They enter through floor drains, sink outlets and gaps around waste pipes, particularly after heavy rain floods those spaces.
Cleanliness affects how well a population establishes once inside. It does not determine whether one arrives. A spotless ground-floor flat beside a shared drain will see them.
Where cleanliness does matter: German cockroaches, which live indoors permanently and feed on residue. Even those usually arrive carried in with groceries, cardboard or a second-hand appliance.
So the useful response is not scrubbing harder. It is sealing the routes — drain covers, gaps around pipework, water kept in unused traps — and treating the drainage itself.
If you live in a flat or a building with shared drainage, the common lines matter more than your own unit.

Can I have German and American cockroaches at the same time?
Yes, and it is common in Pakistani homes — particularly ground-floor properties with a kitchen near the drainage.
They occupy different places and arrive by different routes, so one does not exclude the other. Germans live permanently inside the kitchen, brought in with groceries or packaging. Americans come up from drains and sewers, especially after rain.
Why this matters for treatment: the two need different approaches. Germans need concealed gel inside the kitchen with a follow-up visit for the hatching cycle. Americans need drain treatment and proofing at the point of entry. Doing only one leaves half the problem.
How to tell them apart quickly: Germans are small, about 1.5 cm, and seen in the kitchen day or night. Americans are large, up to 4 cm, and usually appear near drains, bathrooms or the floor at night.
Tell the technician if you have seen both sizes. It changes the plan, and it is the kind of detail people leave out.

How do I know if I have a cockroach infestation rather than one stray?
Seeing one in daylight is the clearest sign there are many. Cockroaches avoid light, so daytime activity usually means competition is pushing them into the open.
What to look for:
- Droppings — small dark specks like coarse pepper, along skirting, inside cupboards and in drawer corners
- A musty smell in the kitchen that does not clear
- Egg cases — small brown capsules glued into crevices and behind appliances
- Shed skins, pale and translucent
- Smear marks along surfaces they travel
- Sightings in daylight, or several in one night
Where to check: behind and under the fridge, inside the motor housing, behind the cooker, under the sink, inside cupboard hinges and corners, and around the microwave. Use a torch and look at joints, not surfaces.
One found at night near a drain is likely a stray. Droppings, a smell or daylight sightings mean a population.

Is one treatment enough before the monsoon?
For drains and the building perimeter, one properly timed pre-monsoon treatment does a great deal. For an established indoor population it will not be enough on its own.
What one pre-monsoon visit achieves: treating the drainage system before it floods, proofing the entry points, and reducing the population waiting to come up. Timed in May or early June, that is genuinely effective.
What it cannot do: clear German cockroaches already breeding inside your kitchen. Those need a programme with a follow-up visit for the hatching cycle, whatever the season.
Through monsoon, heavy rain can wash off external and perimeter applications, so a top-up after a major spell is sometimes needed. We will tell you at survey whether your property is likely to need it — a building with open drainage nearby usually does.
Best value: treat drains before the season, proof the routes in, then reassess rather than booking repeat visits in advance.
