FAQsWasps, Hornets & Scorpions

Nest removal, sting risk, when a scorpion in the house is a warning sign, and what to do before a technician arrives.

Can I remove a wasp or hornet nest myself?

Please do not. This is the one household pest job where attempting it yourself carries a real risk of serious injury.

Wasps and hornets defend a nest collectively. Disturbing it — by spraying it, knocking it, or burning it — triggers a mass response, and stings arrive faster than you can retreat. People are most often hurt falling from a ladder while being stung, not from the stings alone.

The risk is much higher if anyone in the household has a sting allergy, and multiple stings are dangerous even to people who are not allergic.

Until a technician arrives:

  • Keep everyone, especially children, away from the area
  • Close windows on that side of the building
  • Do not spray it, block the entrance, or throw anything at it
  • Note where it is and roughly how big it is

Treatment is normally done at dusk when the colony is inside, and the nest is removed after activity stops.

Where do wasps usually build nests on a building?

Sheltered spots that are quiet and out of the rain — which is why nests are so often found late, once the colony is already large.

The usual locations:

  • Roof spaces, lofts and under eaves
  • Behind and inside air-conditioner units
  • Wall cavities, entered through a small gap or air brick
  • Balcony ceilings and under stair soffits
  • Garden sheds, garages and store rooms
  • Dense hedges, trees and unused water tanks

A nest starts small in spring and expands through summer, so the earlier it is found the simpler the job. The reliable way to locate one is to watch where wasps consistently enter and leave a single point — steady two-way traffic to one gap means the nest is behind it.

If wasps are appearing indoors repeatedly, the nest is very likely inside a cavity or roof space rather than outside.

Why are wasps suddenly bothering us around food?

Late in the season their diet changes. Through summer they hunt insects for the colony; once that work ends they switch to sugar — and become a nuisance around people.

That is why wasps that ignored you in June arrive at every outdoor meal by late summer. They are also more erratic at this stage, which is when most stings happen.

What reduces the problem:

  • Keep bins closed and washed — sugary residue is the main attraction
  • Cover food and sweet drinks outdoors, and check a glass before drinking
  • Clear fallen fruit from the garden
  • Do not swat at them; brisk movement provokes stinging

If numbers are high rather than occasional, there is a nest nearby — on your property or a neighbouring one. Removing the nest is the only thing that resolves it; managing food and bins only reduces the nuisance.

I found a scorpion in the house. What should I do?

Do not try to catch or kill it by hand. Keep everyone away from it, and treat its presence as a sign that there is a route in.

Right now: keep children and pets out of the room, and if you can do so safely from a distance, cover it with a container so it cannot move while help is arranged.

If someone has been stung, seek medical attention immediately. Do not wait to see how it develops, particularly with children, elderly people, or anyone who becomes unwell beyond the local pain. Take a photograph of the scorpion if it is safe to do so — identification helps treatment.

Scorpions enter through door gaps, drains, wall cracks and gaps around pipework, usually hunting insects. They hide in dark, undisturbed places — shoes, stored boxes, under furniture and in bedding.

Until the property is treated, shake out shoes and clothing before use and check bedding at night.

Why do scorpions come inside during summer?

Heat and water. Extreme surface temperatures drive them to shelter, and the coolest, dampest place nearby is usually inside your building.

Peak movement indoors is through the hottest months and again after the first heavy rain, when water floods the ground spaces they shelter in.

Where they enter and settle:

  • Under door gaps, especially external doors without seals
  • Floor drains and gaps around pipework
  • Bathrooms and kitchens — the cool, damp rooms
  • Ground-floor store rooms, garages and stacked boxes
  • Building material, rubble and firewood stored against outside walls

Properties on the edge of a development, near open ground or with rubble nearby see them most.

The lasting fix is proofing plus removing shelter outside — sealing door gaps and drain openings, and clearing stored material away from the walls. Treatment alone, without closing the routes, means the next one walks in.

Do you handle snake and wasp removal in DHA and Bahria Town?

Yes — and these are treated as urgent calls, particularly where children are present.

Developments like DHA and Bahria Town see more of both than dense urban areas, for straightforward reasons: landscaped green belts, boundary planting, open plots between houses, and construction activity that displaces whatever was living in the ground.

Right now, before anyone arrives: keep everyone away from it, do not attempt to catch or kill it, keep it in sight from a safe distance if you can, and close doors to contain it in one room. If anyone has been bitten or stung, seek medical attention immediately rather than waiting to see how it develops.

Beyond removal, the lasting fix is reducing why they came: sealing door gaps and drain openings, clearing rubble and stored material from against boundary walls, keeping planting trimmed back from the building, and controlling the rodents and insects that attract them.

How do I identify a dangerous spider in Pakistan?

Do not try to identify it by handling it. Photograph it from a safe distance — identification matters, but not enough to risk a bite.

The realistic position is that the overwhelming majority of spiders found in Pakistani homes are harmless to people. Bites are rare, and usually happen when a spider is pressed against skin inside clothing or bedding rather than through any aggression.

What to do rather than identify:

  • Photograph it, with something for scale if you can
  • Note where it was found — indoors, in stored boxes, in the garden
  • Contain it under a container if it is safe to do so from a distance
  • Send us the photograph — we can usually identify it without a visit

Sensible precautions that matter more than identification: shake out shoes, clothing and bedding that have been stored or left on the floor, and wear gloves when moving stored boxes, firewood or garden material.

Heavy webbing indoors indicates a good insect supply — which is the more useful thing to treat.

What should I do if someone is bitten by a spider?

Most spider bites in Pakistan cause local pain and swelling and settle on their own. Seek medical attention if symptoms spread beyond the bite or the person feels unwell.

Immediately: clean the area with soap and water, apply something cold to reduce swelling, keep the limb still and raised if possible, and photograph the spider if it can be done safely.

Seek medical help without waiting if pain or swelling spreads beyond the bite site, there is fever, sweating, nausea, cramping or difficulty breathing, the bite is on a child or elderly person, or the area shows increasing redness and heat over the following day.

Take the photograph with you. Identification genuinely helps treatment, and a description from memory rarely does.

Do not cut, suck, burn or apply household remedies to the bite. None of these help and several make the injury worse.

Afterwards, it is worth finding why spiders are in that area — usually a good insect supply, clutter or stored material.

Are wasps dangerous in Pakistan?

Individually a sting is painful rather than serious. The danger is multiple stings from a disturbed nest, and anyone with a sting allergy.

Unlike bees, wasps and hornets can sting repeatedly, and they defend a nest collectively. Disturbing one triggers a mass response — which is why most serious injuries happen while someone is trying to remove a nest themselves, often falling from a ladder as the stings arrive.

Seek medical help immediately if there is difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or throat, dizziness or collapse, a rash spreading beyond the sting, or someone has been stung many times — which is dangerous even without an allergy.

For an ordinary single sting: remove any sting if present, wash the area, apply something cold, and watch for spreading symptoms over the next hour.

Wasps become more of a nuisance late in the season, when their diet shifts to sugar and they start arriving around food and bins.

How do I keep scorpions out of my home?

Close the gaps and remove the shelter outside. Scorpions walk in through openings you can seal, hunting insects you can reduce.

Seal the routes in: fit brushes or seals to external door gaps, cover floor drains, seal gaps around pipework and conduits, repair cracked plaster and wall gaps, and fit mesh to ventilators.

Remove what shelters them outside: clear rubble, building material and firewood stacked against the walls, cut vegetation back from the building, lift stored items off the ground, and remove unused pots and slabs lying flat.

Reduce their food: scorpions come for insects. Controlling the insect population removes the reason they are hunting near your home, and outdoor lighting is usually the driver.

Habits worth keeping through summer: shake out shoes and clothing before use, check bedding at night, do not walk barefoot outdoors after dark, and use a torch.

Properties near open ground, rubble or construction see them most, and there the perimeter matters more than the building.
