A guest reported bed bugs. What do we do?
Take the room out of service, treat it properly, and inspect the rooms either side and above and below. Do not simply move the guest and re-let the room the next day.
Bed bugs arrive with luggage. They are not a cleanliness failure, and treating it as one wastes the response. What matters is speed and containment.
- Block the room immediately rather than after the weekend
- Bag the linen at the door, not in the corridor
- Inspect the frame joints, headboard, bedside furniture and skirting — not just the mattress
- Check the adjoining rooms; they move through shared walls and service ducts
- Plan for two or three visits, because the eggs survive the first
- Log the report, the action and the close-out
The record matters as much as the treatment. A hotel that can show a documented response is in a far better position with an online complaint than one that says it never happened.

How do you service a hotel without disturbing guests?
By working back-of-house during quiet hours and treating guest rooms on a rotation tied to your occupancy, not to a fixed calendar.
Most of the work is not in the rooms at all. Kitchens, stores, bin areas, laundry, service corridors and the external perimeter are where problems start and where a programme spends its time.
How it is scheduled:
- Kitchens and back-of-house after service, overnight
- Guest rooms on rotation while blocked for cleaning or maintenance
- Discreet monitoring in public areas — no visible devices in a lobby or restaurant
- Technicians briefed on guest-facing conduct and uniform

Which areas of a hotel cause the most pest problems?
Back-of-house, almost always. Guest rooms get the complaints, but the kitchen, bin store and service corridors are where the population lives.
In order of how often we find the source there:
- Kitchen drains and grease traps — warm, wet and rarely opened
- Bin store and waste compound — lids open, spillage underneath, doors propped in hot weather
- Dry store and goods-in — stock arriving with insects already in the cardboard
- Laundry and linen rooms — warmth and lint
- Service ducts and plant rooms — the areas nobody is assigned
The pattern to watch for: complaints appearing in guest rooms directly above or beside a back-of-house problem. Treating the room without finding the source guarantees a repeat.
Food areas should be run to restaurant standards, because the provincial food authorities inspect hotel kitchens the same way they inspect restaurants.

What pest records should a hotel keep?
The same set a food business keeps, plus a log of every guest complaint and what was done about it.
Keep on file and produceable within a minute:
- The written pest control programme and service schedule
- Dated service reports for every visit
- A device map matching what is actually installed
- Action levels by area — kitchen, store, guest floors, external
- Corrective actions raised and closed out
- A guest-complaint log: room, date, report, action, re-let date
- Staff training records for housekeeping bed-bug awareness
That last one earns its place. Housekeeping staff who know what to look for on a mattress seam find problems weeks before a guest does, and the difference between finding it yourself and reading it in a review is the whole game.

What should a hotel pest control contract include?
Scheduled back-of-house service, a guest-room response procedure, and records you can produce for a food authority or a corporate audit.
What to require:
- Kitchen, stores, bin area and laundry serviced on a fixed schedule, outside service hours
- A defined response time for a guest room report, and a procedure for blocking and clearing the room
- Discreet monitoring in public areas — nothing visible in a lobby or restaurant
- A numbered device map and dated service reports
- Housekeeping training on what to look for, with the training logged
- A complaint log linking each report to the action taken and the re-let date
Hotel kitchens are inspected by the provincial food authorities on the same basis as restaurants, so the food-side records need to meet that standard.

What should housekeeping look for during room turnover?
Sixty seconds at the bed catches most problems weeks before a guest reports one.
Train the team to check, on every strip-down:
- Mattress seams and piping, especially at the head end — small dark spots like a fine pen mark
- Bed frame joints and slats — where they actually live
- Behind the headboard and the wall behind it
- Bedside furniture joints and drawer runners
- Blood spotting on sheets when stripping
Give them one instruction for a suspected find: stop, do not strip further, bag the linen at the bedside, and report it. Carrying linen through the corridor to the laundry is how one room becomes several.
Log every check. A hotel that can show trained staff and dated records is in a far stronger position with a complaint than one relying on memory.

We run a guest house. What is the minimum we should have in place?
A scheduled programme, a bed-bug check at room turnover, and a written log. Those three cover most of the risk for a smaller property.
Minimum viable programme:
- Scheduled service of the kitchen, stores, bin area and common areas
- Room checks at turnover — mattress seams, bed frame joints and headboard. Sixty seconds per room.
- A response procedure — block the room, bag linen at the bedside, treat, and do not re-let until cleared
- A log of every report and what was done about it
- Proofing — door sweeps, meshed drains, sealed pipe openings
Online reviews are the real exposure for a guest house. A property that can show a dated response is in a far stronger position than one relying on memory.

How often should a hotel be serviced for pests?
Daily deputation for a working hotel, with scheduled technical services beneath it. A guest complaint is a review, and a review is permanent.
Hotels carry a risk profile almost no other building has: guests arrive from everywhere with luggage, rooms turn over constantly, and the person who finds a problem is a paying customer with an audience.
What daily on-site cover changes:
- A room complaint is attended within the hour, before the guest posts about it
- Rooms are checked at turnover, when they are empty and accessible
- Kitchens, stores and waste areas are monitored every day, not fortnightly
- Housekeeping reports go to someone on site who can act immediately
Underneath that, scheduled services run by zone — kitchens and waste areas most frequently, guest rooms and public areas on a planned cycle, external perimeter regularly.
The specific risk to plan for is bed bugs, which arrive in luggage regardless of how clean the hotel is. Early detection at turnover keeps it to one room; discovery by a guest rarely does.
