In Pakistan “fumigation” is used to mean almost any spraying, but genuine fumigation is a completely different process — a gas filling a sealed space. Knowing which one you are buying prevents most disappointment, and it matters absolutely if you export.
This guide explains what fumigation actually is, how it differs from the spray treatment most homes and offices need, when a fumigation certificate is required, and how container and warehouse fumigation works.
Fumigation vs pest control: the difference
When a home visit is described as “fumigation”, it almost always means a residual spray — which is the correct treatment for a house. The word is just being used loosely. Genuine fumigation is something else entirely.

So if you have cockroaches at home, you need pest control treatment — often mislabelled as fumigation, but the right job. If you are shipping cargo that requires a certificate, you need genuine fumigation, and a spray service cannot produce one.
When you genuinely need fumigation
- Export consignments where the buyer or destination country requires a fumigation certificate
- Stored grain, rice, pulses and dry commodities with stored product pest activity
- Shipping containers before loading
- Timber and packaging materials subject to international requirements
Where it is not needed: as general prevention in an occupied warehouse, in place of monitoring and goods-in control, or on a calendar because it was done last year. Fumigation is a response to a specific need, not a routine — and anyone selling it as an annual ritual is selling you something you may not require.
Export and container fumigation
For exporters this is the part that matters, because delays are expensive. The most common cause of a missed shipment is not the treatment going wrong — it is booking too close to the vessel date. Sealing, exposure and full aeration commonly take 24 to 72 hours.
Phosphine fumigation is the standard method for stored commodities and containers, and it is issued with a certificate on completion. When you book, send us:
- The destination country and the buyer’s written requirement
- The commodity and packaging type
- Container numbers and the loading location
- Your vessel or despatch date
Requirements vary by destination, so send the buyer’s actual document rather than a summary — it is what the certificate has to satisfy. We cover Karachi Port, Port Qasim, Gwadar and the dry ports.
Is fumigation safe?
Yes, when carried out properly — and “properly” means the aeration period is never shortened for anyone’s schedule. What makes it safe is control: the space is sealed and fully evacuated for the whole exposure period, trained operators monitor throughout, access is controlled, and re-entry happens only when monitoring confirms the space is clear.
This is exactly why it is never a job for untrained people, and why an occupied building is never fumigated. Any provider willing to compress the aeration time is putting people at risk, and you should decline. Used correctly, fumigation leaves no residue on the commodity and is the accepted method for stored goods worldwide.
Fumigation for warehouses and food facilities
A warehouse should trigger fumigation from monitoring, not habit. A site running a proper programme — scheduled inspection, pheromone monitoring, stock rotation, incoming inspection and proofing — needs fumigation rarely, and knows precisely when it does because the monitoring says so.
