Why Cockroaches Appear After Rain in Pakistan

What is actually happening

In most Pakistani buildings the resident cockroach population is not in the kitchen. It is in the drainage — floor gullies, gully traps, sewer lines, grease traps and the moist voids around them. It is warm, dark, wet and full of organic matter, which is close to ideal.

When heavy rain arrives, three things happen at once:

1. The drains fill. Water displaces the air pockets and harbourage where cockroaches shelter, and they move upward — the only direction available.
2. Dry traps let them straight in. A floor gully that has not been used in weeks loses its water seal to evaporation, leaving an open pipe from the sewer to your floor. This is the single most common entry route in Pakistani homes.
3. Humidity accelerates breeding. Warm, humid conditions shorten development time significantly, so an existing population expands fast rather than merely relocating.

The result feels like an invasion. It is really an eviction — upward, into your building.

The five-minute fix most people miss

Pour a jug of water down every floor drain you rarely use — the guest bathroom, the utility area, the servant quarter, a spare washroom. Each one has a U-bend that holds a water seal. When that seal evaporates, the drain becomes an open pipe from the sewer into the room.

In Pakistani homes with multiple bathrooms this accounts for a large share of “cockroaches appeared overnight” reports. Refill unused traps weekly through the monsoon, and fit drain covers or gully grates where they are missing.

Where they come up, in order

1. Unused floor gullies — dried-out traps, the number one route
2. Kitchen sink and washbasin outlets — especially where the pipe passes through the wall unsealed
3. Grease traps — permanently warm, wet and organic
4. Manholes and inspection chambers in the yard or lane, with broken or ill-fitting covers
5. Expansion gaps and service risers in apartment blocks, letting them move floor to floor

City differences

• Karachi — the mild coastal winter means drain activity never fully stops, so the post-rain spike starts from an already-high baseline. Maintained baiting beats seasonal treatment here.
• Lahore — a genuine winter lull, then a sharp monsoon spike. Timing treatment for May gives the biggest return.
• Islamabad / Rawalpindi — higher rainfall but cooler; the spike arrives slightly later and fades sooner.

If it is a restaurant or food premises

Common questions

Do cockroaches actually come from the rain itself?

No. They are already living in the drainage system. Rain floods that system and pushes them upward into buildings. Nothing is arriving from outdoors — it is moving up from below.

Why do they appear in a clean house?

Because the source is the drain, not the kitchen. Cleanliness reduces food and harbourage indoors, which matters, but it does not affect what is living in the sewer line beneath the building.

Will covering the drains solve it?

It helps considerably and is worth doing. But covers do not address the population itself, and cockroaches also use unsealed pipe penetrations and service risers. Combine covers with baiting and drain treatment.

Why did they come back two weeks after treatment?

Egg cases are physically protected and largely unaffected by treatment. When they hatch, you see a second wave. This is expected, which is why a follow-up visit at roughly 2–4 weeks is part of a proper programme rather than a sign of failure.

Is one treatment enough before the monsoon?

For a domestic property with no established infestation, a May treatment plus drain hygiene usually holds. Restaurants, food premises and buildings with a history of activity need a maintained programme rather than a single visit.
