Quick answer: To eliminate cockroaches in Karachi you need to treat the harbourage and the shared drainage route, not just the insects you can see. The reliable method is targeted gel baiting in cracks and hinges, combined with drain and manhole treatment, sealing of entry points, and a follow-up visit 10–14 days later to break the egg cycle. Surface sprays alone push roaches deeper into voids and rarely solve the problem.

Why cockroaches are so persistent in Karachi

Three local conditions make Karachi one of the hardest cockroach environments in Pakistan. First, year-round warmth and humidity mean breeding never fully pauses. Second, dense construction with shared drainage and common walls lets roaches move freely between neighbouring units — so treating one flat while the building is infested gives only temporary relief. Third, water scarcity leads to stored water in kitchens and bathrooms, which provides exactly the moisture roaches need.

This is why “we sprayed and they came back” is the single most common complaint we hear. The spray worked on the visible insects; nothing addressed the harbourage or the route back in.

Identify what you are dealing with first

Species Appearance Where it lives Difficulty
German cockroach Small (12–15 mm), tan, two dark stripes behind the head Inside kitchens — cabinet hinges, appliance motors, under sinks Hardest; breeds fastest indoors
American cockroach Large (35–40 mm), reddish-brown, can glide Drains, manholes, sewers, basements Enters from drainage; needs drain treatment
Oriental cockroach Dark brown to near-black, glossy Damp areas, ground-floor storerooms, garbage points Moisture-driven

The distinction matters: a German cockroach problem is an indoor breeding problem solved by baiting harbourage points. An American cockroach problem is usually an entry problem solved by treating drains and sealing routes. Using the wrong approach is why treatments fail.

Cockroach pressure in Karachi, month by month

Karachi’s coastal humidity means breeding never fully stops, but pressure is far from flat. Activity climbs from March, peaks through the monsoon (July–September) when rising drainage water pushes American cockroaches indoors, then eases as humidity falls.

Which species is in your kitchen?

The two species that dominate Pakistani homes behave differently, and the wrong approach is why treatments fail.

American cockroach~31% · drain treatment

German cockroaches breed inside the kitchen, so baiting harbourage works. American cockroaches enter from shared drainage — baiting alone will not stop re-entry, which is why drains and floor traps must be treated and covered.

The method that actually works

Step 1 — Remove the food and water supply

Before any treatment: store food in sealed containers, clear grease from behind and under the cooker, empty the bin nightly, fix dripping taps, and dry sinks before bed. Roaches survive weeks without food but only days without water — removing moisture does real damage to a population.

Step 2 — Targeted gel baiting, not fogging

Small spots of insecticidal gel are placed precisely where roaches shelter: cabinet hinges, the underside of shelves, appliance housings, pipe entries and skirting gaps. Roaches feed and return to the harbourage, where the active ingredient spreads through the population — including insects you never see. This reaches the colony in a way surface spraying cannot.

Step 3 — Treat the drains and shared routes

For American cockroaches, drains, floor traps, manholes and service ducts must be treated and then kept covered. In apartment buildings this step is essential; without it, the neighbouring unit simply re-supplies your kitchen.

Step 4 — Seal the entry points

Mesh over floor drains, sealant around pipe penetrations, door sweeps on external doors, and repairs to damaged tile grout. Exclusion is what makes the result last.

Step 5 — Follow up in 10–14 days

Cockroach eggs are protected inside a hardened case that most treatments cannot penetrate. Newly hatched nymphs emerge roughly one to two weeks later, so a second visit timed to that window is what converts a knock-down into elimination. Skipping it is the most common reason infestations rebound.

What not to do

  • Do not fog or spray over gel bait — repellent spray drives roaches away from the bait and cancels the treatment.
  • Do not rely on supermarket chalk or powder in a real infestation; it scatters the population into wall voids and makes professional treatment harder.
  • Do not treat one flat in isolation if the building is infested — coordinate with neighbours or building management.
  • Do not deep-clean immediately after treatment; washing treated surfaces removes the residual and the bait.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?

Visible activity usually drops sharply within 48–72 hours of correct gel baiting. Full elimination takes about two to three weeks, because the egg cases must hatch and the emerging nymphs must contact the treatment — which is why a follow-up visit is scheduled 10–14 days after the first.

Why do cockroaches come back after spraying?

Because spraying kills only exposed insects. Egg cases survive, harbourage inside cabinet voids and appliances is untouched, and in shared buildings roaches re-enter through drains and wall penetrations. Lasting control requires baiting the harbourage, treating drains and sealing entry points.

Is cockroach treatment safe for children and pets?

Yes, when WHO-approved products are applied correctly. Gel bait is placed in concealed cracks and voids rather than on open surfaces, and treated areas are safe once dry — normally 30–45 minutes. Ask your provider for the product name and re-entry time in writing.

Do I need to empty my kitchen cabinets?

Clearing cabinets helps, because it exposes the hinges and corners where gel is most effective. Food should be sealed or removed; crockery can usually stay if shelves are accessible.

Can I get rid of cockroaches permanently?

You can keep a property free of them, but “permanent” depends on exclusion and hygiene being maintained — particularly in shared buildings where neighbouring units remain a source. Quarterly or annual maintenance visits are the practical way to stay clear long-term.
