Bed bugs — khatmal — do not clear on their own, and the two things people try first usually make it worse. This guide shows you how to confirm you have them, why a single treatment never works, and how to prepare so the job succeeds the first time.
Bed bugs are one of the most distressing household pests and one of the most misunderstood. They are not a sign of a dirty home — they travel in luggage, second-hand furniture and shared walls, and they arrive in spotless houses as readily as any other.
How to know it is really bed bugs
Check the bed before you judge from the bites. People react very differently to bed bug bites, and some do not react at all, so bites alone are unreliable. The evidence is on the furniture.
- Small dark spots on mattress seams, bed frame joints and behind the headboard — the most reliable sign
- Shed skins, pale and translucent, in the same places
- Live insects in frame joints and slats — about the size of an apple seed
- Small blood spots on the sheet
- Bites in lines or clusters on skin exposed at night
Use a torch and check the joints of the frame and the underside of the slats, not just the mattress surface. Photograph anything you find — if you are unsure, send the photo before booking, so you do not pay for treatment you may not need.
Why one treatment never works
Bed bug eggs are protected and hatch roughly one to two weeks after treatment. A single visit removes the adults and leaves the next generation. This is the single most important thing to understand — and the reason to be cautious of anyone advertising a guaranteed one-visit permanent solution.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Visit 1 | Full treatment of frame, mattress, surrounding furniture and room |
| 1–2 weeks | Eggs hatch; a few sightings may continue — this is expected |
| Visit 2 | Treats the newly hatched generation |
| Visit 3 if needed | Confirms clearance in heavier cases |
A visit takes a few hours; the full programme runs two to three visits over three to six weeks. Seeing one after the first visit is normal and does not mean it failed — tell us rather than spraying it yourself.
The two mistakes that make it worse
Do not move to another room. This is the most common mistake and the main way a one-room problem becomes a whole-house problem. Bed bugs follow the carbon dioxide you breathe out — move, and they move with you, and now there are two rooms to treat.
Do not throw out the mattress before treatment. It is expensive, it rarely solves anything because they live in the frame and surrounding furniture too, and carrying it through the house spreads them to every room it passes.
The truth about heat treatment
Whole-room heat treatment is advertised widely but is not actually available at scale in most of Pakistan, and it is honest to say so rather than promise it. What genuinely works here is a properly executed multi-visit programme.
Where heat does help, and you can do it yourself: washing and hot-drying bedding and clothing. Heat is what kills bed bugs, not detergent — a hot tumble dry does more than washing alone. Do this before every visit and it shortens the whole programme.
How to prepare for treatment
Your preparation decides how well the first visit works:
- Strip the bed and hot-wash all bedding, then bag it
- Declutter around and under the bed so the technician can reach the frame
- Move the bed slightly from the wall
- Do not spray anything yourself — it scatters them and interferes with treatment
- Keep sleeping in the same room until told otherwise
Where bed bugs actually hide
Treatment succeeds or fails on reaching every hiding place, and people consistently miss the same spots. Bed bugs stay within a few feet of where you sleep, in tight, dark cracks:
- Mattress seams, piping and the underside
- Bed frame joints, slats and the headboard — especially screw holes and joints
- Behind the headboard and in wall cracks near the bed
- Bedside tables, drawers and their runners
- Skirting boards and electrical points near the bed
- Seams of nearby upholstered chairs and sofas
This is why treating only the mattress fails — the frame and surrounding furniture hold as many as the mattress does. A proper treatment covers all of it, which is also why the room needs to be accessible.
Bed bug bites or something else?
Bites alone are unreliable, but the pattern helps point in the right direction before you confirm with physical evidence:
| Sign | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Bites in lines or clusters, dark spots on the bed frame | Bed bugs (khatmal) |
| Bites mostly on ankles and lower legs, pets in the home | Fleas |
| Itching worst on waking, no bites or marks | Dust mites (allergy, not bites) |
| Biting that started after birds nested nearby | Bird mites |
Getting this right matters because each is treated differently. We identify the species free before quoting, so you do not pay for the wrong treatment.
Bed bugs in hotels and guest houses
For hospitality this is a business risk, not just a nuisance. Bed bugs arrive in guest luggage regardless of how clean the property is, and the person who finds them is a paying guest with a phone. Early detection at room turnover keeps it to one room; discovery by a guest becomes a permanent review.
A hotel programme covers room inspection at turnover, a defined response protocol, and staff training so housekeeping recognise the early signs. See our hotel pest control FAQs for how this is scheduled.
Getting it treated properly
Pest Orbit Pakistan treats bed bugs across Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad with a multi-visit programme timed to the egg cycle. We are ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified, IAF-accredited and Ph.D.-led, and we identify the species free before any treatment — because khatmal, fleas and bird mites are treated differently and are often confused.
It is an unpleasant problem, not an unsolvable one. It resolves reliably when the programme is followed.
